Love art projects but hate the mess?

I love crafts and incorporating them into my lessons with students. But, I’ll be honest - I hate the mess. So working with paint was almost never an option for me – ever.

Then came Kwik Stix.

Have you heard of them?

They’re an ingenious invention from some friends I’m sure you already know well, The Pencil Grip, Inc.  

Kwik Stix are solid tempera paint sticks that can be used by kids (and adults) of all ages without the fear of making a mess. Each color comes in its own plastic stick with a snap tight lid – meaning there’s no need for brushes, paint cups, water bowls, paper towels, smocks… or anything else!

Amazing, I know.

When you’re done with one color, simply put the cap back on and reach for the next.

The paint dries in 90 seconds or less, which means you also don’t need to schedule blocks of time in advance in order to use them – or make space in your room to allow those works of art to dry.

They’re incredibly easy to use and so classroom-friendly!

I learned about Kwik Stix at a Teacher Blogger Meet-up I recently attended in French Lick, Indiana. The Pencil Grip, Inc. was incredibly generous and donated a complete set to every attendee. I brought them home and tried them out on a product I recently revised, my Mother’s Day Kit. The resource includes three gifts for mom, including forms to make a Bloom Ball. I thought I’d see just how well the sticks would hold up on a 3-D shape that went together fairly quickly.

To me, the paint had a texture similar to lipstick and went on in the same way. It was creamy, but not wet. The paint stayed exactly where I placed it and unlike lipstick, it didn’t smudge. You can even layer color, just like with regular paint. 

As promised, the paint dried incredibly fast. I was afraid that although “dry,” the paint might smear or mark when I cut out the circles or as I was putting all of the pieces together. But, it didn’t. Everything stayed exactly how I left it.

And even better, I didn’t have a single trace of paint on my work surface or my hands - I was sold.
